In an effort to address the alarming incidence of leadership turnover in social justice organizations, Susan and Albert Wells began a unique experiment. In 1989, they retooled their Montana ranch as a place where community activists and organizers could come for two to four weeks to restore their energies and creativity and return to their jobs with fresh hope and commitment. Narrating the discoveries of the 16-year long project, Changing Course: Windcall and the Art of Renewal is both filled with the personal reflections of Susan Wells and many of the over 400 residents who participated in the program.

The book provides valuable insight into the causes and course of burnout, and most importantly, offers a tested model for renewing and sustaining social change leadership for the long haul.

Featuring seven in-depth profiles of social change leaders who are alumni of the Windcall Resident Program: Pamela Chiang, Scott Douglas, Bob Fulkerson, Kathy Goldman, Jose Montenegro, Janet Robideau, and Leah Wise.
